Vale – Shane ‘Stumpy’ Gration

The Greensborough Football Club is deeply saddened to advise you of the passing of GFC Life Member – Shane ‘Stumpy’ Gration.

Shane passed away on Tuesday the 18th February 2025, aged 69.

Stumpy first came to Greensborough as a junior in the late 1960’s, playing in the Under 13s. His junior playing days were studded with awards;

  • In 1970 he played in the U15 Rovers team where he won the Best & Fairest.
  • In 1971 he played in the C grade (U17) team where again he won the Best & Fairest.
  • In 1972 playing in the C grade (U17) team where he won the goal kicking award with 76 goals.

There is little data of his playing history in the seniors, although it appear he did start playing around 1974 and he wore the famous number 2.

Stumpy, as he was then referred to at this stage of his footy career also played seniors at Montmorency, but little of his time there was shared with the GFC.
Perhaps he wanted to keep that quiet?

After his playing days were behind him, Stumpy worked in various committee roles over numerous years and attained GFC Life Membership in 2007. He then took over the role as President in 2008 and continued in this role for 6 years until the end of 2013. He again took on this role for the 2019 season, where the seniors and reserves were runners-up and our inaugural women’s team won their first flag.

Stumpy was much loved by the club and he was a ‘heart & soul’ Greensborough person. He would have done anything for the club and often did. He will be sorely missed by all.

Our thoughts are with Sue, Luke, Todd and his sisters Trisha and Anne.
