Greensborough Football Club Life Member
The Greensborough Football Club mourns the passing of Life Member Peter Abbott.
Peter was a true clubman whose contribution helped shape the proud history of our football club.
A local boy, Peter began playing for Greensborough in at least 1949 and went on to give outstanding service to the club throughout the 1950s and into the mid-1960s. Peter was a member of our drought-breaking 1952 premiership team under Percy Adamson, defeating Eltham, and again tasted premiership success in 1955 under Freddie Anderson with a memorable victory over Montmorency. He continued his senior playing career until the end of 1960, finishing with an outstanding 178 senior games in the green and white.
Peter’s commitment to Greensborough extended well beyond his performances on the field. While still playing, he served continuously on the club committee from 1953 to 1964, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the club’s growth and success. He also coached our junior teams from 1957 to 1960, helping develop the next generation of Greensborough footballers and passing on the values that defined his own career. In recognition of his extraordinary service, Peter was deservedly awarded Life Membership of the Greensborough Football Club in 1959.
Peter’s wife, Lois, was equally devoted to the club. As Secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary, she played an invaluable role behind the scenes, while Peter and Lois regularly opened their home to host club social functions. In another example of the selfless volunteer spirit that built our club, Lois also took on the demanding task of washing the senior team’s jumpers after each match. Together, Peter and Lois Abbott embodied the spirit of community, commitment and service that became the foundation of the Greensborough Football Club.
They were among the dedicated volunteers who helped rebuild the club following World War II, laying the foundations for the powerhouse Greensborough became during the 1960s—and the proud football club it remains today. Peter’s legacy will forever remain part of our club’s history.
